- The
Global Campaign for Good Urban Governance
- The Habitat Agenda,
adopted at the second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements
(Habitat II) in Istanbul in June 1996, commits UNCHS (Habitat) to working
towards the establishment of good urban governance in the world’s towns
and cities. The Global Campaign for Good Urban Governance signals a
new and strategic approach to achieve this goal.

- This project is exploring
the changing nature of security and the changing needs of global governance.
The demands on governance are accelerating, as the world struggles to
cope with explosive increases in both numbers of people and the interactions
among them. Many of the problems requiring expanded governance, such
as environmental degradation, civil violence, and organized crime, go
beyond the capacity of states. These threats require transnational solutions
that incorporate states, non-governmental organizations of all types,
and the private sector. Yet little is known about who all the new actors
are and what their roles in governance can and should be. This project
investigates the new actors , their relationship to states, and the
conditions under which they rectify or exacerbate existing deficiencies
in governance.
